Empire of the Limit

Empire of the Limit

Philosophical science fiction in nine novels.

A civilization has learned to trust the system that preserves memory, assigns value, and keeps order as naturally as it trusts air or light. Then the system begins to contradict itself.

Empire of the Limit follows people trying to preserve a common order while discovering that no system can fully replace the living, imperfect connection between one person and another.

The Cycle

Three trilogies.
Nine novels.
One world.

The cycle moves from the collapse of a universal system, to the impossibility of measuring a person without distortion, and finally to the human need to build an order that can outlive us.

I

Crisis of the Limit

The system that has preserved memory and sustained the Empire for centuries begins to return contradictory answers. The first trilogy follows the collapse of universal order, the price of preserving it, and the search for another way to connect human beings.

II

Crisis of Measure

A future society attempts to build a system of absolute meritocracy and objective human evaluation. The more precise the system becomes, the more clearly its own limits appear.

III

Crisis of the Human Limit

The final trilogy turns to the question beneath every earlier crisis: why do people build systems designed to survive them, and what remains when no universal order is guaranteed?

Trilogy I · Crisis of the Limit

Order was eternal.
Until it stopped answering.

The first trilogy begins when the Limit — the structure that has defined the value of action for generations — starts behaving inconsistently. Some try to restore it. Others begin to ask whether the order they trusted ever existed in the form they imagined.

Reconstruction of the Limit

With familiar answers gone, the Empire tries to restore balance. The harder its people work to save the system, the more profoundly they change the world around it.

The New Limit

The old order cannot simply be restored. The question becomes whether a new basis for coexistence can be created without reproducing the same assumptions.

Roadmap

Nine books.
One long argument.

The first trilogy is the beginning, not the complete statement. Each later crisis changes the scale of the question without leaving the world behind.

Beyond the books

Science fiction as a way to examine the world.

A podcast about power, culture, technology, religion, war, and human nature through speculative fiction. Herbert, Orwell, Le Guin, the Strugatskys and others become a way to ask how invented worlds expose the structures of our own.
